Introduction
The paleo diet has become one of the most popular diets over the last several years. Proponents of this dietary approach claim it mimics the eating habits of our ancient ancestors and can be beneficial in promoting health, weight loss, and improved energy levels. However, there are also some potential downsides to the paleo diet that must be taken into consideration before making it part of your lifestyle. In this blog post, we will discuss the potential cons of following a paleo diet plan.
What Is the Paleo Diet?
The paleo diet is based on the idea that certain foods that were eaten during Paleolithic times are more closely aligned with our genetic makeup than those consumed in modern times. The goal is to eat like our hunter-gatherer ancestors did, consuming only foods that could have been obtained by hunting and gathering in nature. This means avoiding processed and refined foods as much as possible and focusing instead on obtaining nutrients from plants (fruits, vegetables), nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, meat, and healthy oils like coconut oil or olive oil.
Potential Cons of Paleo Diet
1. Too Much Restriction: One potential con of following a paleo diet is its restrictive nature. All grains (including whole grains), most legumes (like beans and lentils), dairy products (except for ghee), potatoes, added sugars, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, MSG and other flavorings are off limits when following a strict paleo diet plan. Following such an intense regimen may not be suitable for all individuals depending on their current health status or lifestyle restraints.
2. High Cost: Another potential downside to following a paleo-style eating plan is its cost associated with sourcing organic fresh produce and organic grass-fed meat which can increase expenses significantly compared to non-organic food items available at conventional stores or supermarkets.
3. Lack Of Variety: A third downside to this type of eating plan is its lack of variety; since so many food groups are excluded from the menu options can become quite limited leading to boredom quickly setting in if you don’t put forth effort towards creating interesting meals each day.
4. Difficulty With Eating Out: Finally eating out while following a paleo diet can prove challenging as many restaurant menus won’t include compliant items; leaving you to make special requests or settling for something not ideal if you don’t come prepared with your own food items from home on hand!
Conclusion
In conclusion there are both pros and cons related to any dietary decision we make so it's best to conduct research into all aspects prior to committing yourself fully to any particular way of eating – this includes weighing up pros vs cons related specifically to going ‘all in’ with a strict Paleo approach!
