The Mediterranean Diet is a healthy way of eating that focuses on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, olive oil and lean proteins. It's been found to help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. But there are some foods that aren't allowed on this diet. Here's a list of what foods are not allowed on the Mediterranean Diet:
Processed meats like bacon, hot dogs, deli meat and sausages
Fried foods
Refined carbohydrates like white bread and pasta
Sweets, candy and desserts
Sugary drinks such as sodas and juice drinks
Trans fats found in margarine and processed baked goods
Refined oils such as canola oil
Alcohol in excess
Full-fat dairy products
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
Although the Mediterranean Diet typically includes fish or seafood two to three times per week, it does not include all types of fish – just those that are sustainable and lower in mercury for example salmon, anchovies, sardines and herring instead of swordfish or tilefish which are high on the mercury scale. Additionally some shellfish should be avoided including oysters due to their risk for contamination from viruses or bacteria like vibrio vulnificus which can cause serious illness or death in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions like liver disease or diabetes.
By avoiding these restricted foods people following a Mediterranean Diet can enjoy all the benefits this lifestyle has to offer - better weight management, improved heart health and increased longevity with significantly lower rates of cancer diagnoses then those who don’t adhere strictly to its guidelines!
